Custom Retail Displays in Vancouver: Inside the ATACZ Metrotown Store
When ATACZ, another proudly Canadian business needed a series of custom fixtures for its Metrotown retail location in Burnaby, the goal was to create a store environment that felt distinctive while remaining practical for everyday retail use.
Klo Lab worked on the project from design through fabrication and installation, producing a collection of custom retail fixtures locally in Vancouver. The completed project included five oversized organically shaped pegboards, two large hardware-free retail displays, and a custom plywood storage bench.
Rather than relying on standard store fixtures, each piece was designed specifically for the space and manufactured in-house.
Five Oversized Custom Pegboard Displays
One of the defining elements of the store is a series of five large-scale wooden pegboards installed throughout the retail space. Instead of traditional rectangular panels, the pegboards were designed with oversized organic shapes that create a more sculptural feature on the walls.
The pegboard system also gives the retailer flexibility to change merchandising layouts as products and displays evolve.
Each panel was CNC fabricated in our Vancouver shop and designed to work with removable pegs and shelving, clothing racks, and folding pegboards, allowing merchandise to be repositioned without rebuilding the fixture.
For retailers, this kind of modular display system can be particularly useful when collections, product sizes or merchandising strategies change throughout the year.

Hardware-Free Retail Displays
We also designed and fabricated two large freestanding retail displays using a hardware-free assembly system.
The components are CNC machined to fit together precisely, allowing the structures to be assembled without visible metal fasteners or conventional furniture hardware.
This approach creates a cleaner finished appearance while also allowing fixtures to be designed for easier transportation, assembly and future disassembly.
For retail environments, especially pop-ups, multi-location brands and stores that regularly change layouts, designing fixtures around modular or knock-down construction can significantly improve flexibility.
Custom Plywood Storage Bench
The project also included a custom plywood bench that combines seating with practical storage.
Retail fixtures often need to accomplish more than one job, particularly when floor space is limited. Incorporating storage directly into furniture helps keep merchandise, packaging and operational items accessible without adding separate cabinetry to the store.
The bench was designed to visually coordinate with the other plywood fixtures while providing additional functionality for the staff and retail environment.
Designed, Fabricated and Installed Locally
One of the biggest advantages of working with a local design and fabrication studio is being able to manage the project from concept through installation.
Our custom retail projects can include:
fixture and display design
CAD and production drawings
CNC fabrication
plywood and acrylic fabrication
prototyping
custom pegboard systems
modular and hardware-free furniture
finishing and assembly
delivery and installation
Because design and manufacturing happen within the same team, adjustments can be made with the realities of fabrication, materials, installation and transportation already considered.
For retailers, designers and architects, that can eliminate a significant amount of back-and-forth between separate designers, fabricators and installers.
Why Canadian Retailers Are Looking Closer to Home
Sourcing retail fixtures domestically has become increasingly relevant for Canadian businesses.
As of September 8, 2026, Canada introduced new counter-tariffs on a range of U.S.-origin products. Certain categories of U.S.-origin wooden furniture and plywood are now subject to tariffs as high as 50%, depending on their tariff classification.
For a Canadian retailer importing a substantial fixture package from the United States, those additional costs can materially change the economics of a project.
Working with a Canadian manufacturer can help retailers reduce exposure to:
cross-border tariffs on finished U.S.-origin fixtures
currency fluctuations
customs and brokerage requirements
international freight costs
longer cross-border lead times
complications when modifications are required after production
The advantage is avoiding many of the additional costs and uncertainties associated with importing finished retail fixtures across the border.
Custom Retail Fixtures Made in Vancouver
The ATACZ Metrotown project is a good example of what becomes possible when retail fixtures are designed specifically around the brand, merchandise and physical space rather than selected from a catalogue.
Klo Lab designs and manufactures custom retail displays, pegboard systems, furniture, point-of-sale fixtures and CNC-fabricated installations in Vancouver, BC, for retailers and commercial clients across Canada.
Whether the project involves one custom display or an entire fixture package, we can work from an existing concept or help develop the design from the beginning.
