How We Designed a Rolling Pegboard That Ships Flat for Retail Stores
Great design should be as functional for the person shipping the product as it is for the person using it. Our latest project, a modular rolling retail pegboard, was born from a specific set of challenges: how do we create a large-scale retail display that is stable, mobile, and, most importantly, easy to ship?
The Design Brief
The goal was clear. We needed to develop a rolling retail display that integrated perfectly with our existing pegboard accessories while introducing two new features: a specialized hook-on cabinet and a sturdy clothing rail.
However, the path to the final product required us to solve some significant engineering hurdles.
The Challenge: Shipping and Portability
Traditional retail racks often come with long, awkward legs. While these provide a wide base for stability, they are a nightmare for logistics. They require oversized boxes and lead to expensive shipping rates.

The Solution: Foldable Engineering and Balanced Loading
We went back to the drawing board to rethink the display's anatomy.
1. The Foldable Base Instead of fixed, protruding legs, we modified the base to work with our existing pegboard panels. This allows the legs to fold, making the entire unit shipping-friendly and flat-packable. This design choice significantly reduced shipping costs and simplified the unboxing experience for the client.
2. The Double Hook System. To solve the tipping issue, we designed a double hook system with a precision peg slot. This allows clothing to be distributed evenly on both sides of the board. By centering the weight over the locking casters, the unit remains rock-solid even when fully loaded with heavy inventory.
3. Endless Customization The front of the unit remains a classic Klo Lab pegboard. This gives retailers total freedom to rearrange shelves, hooks, and our new custom-fit cabinets as their collections change.
From Whistler to Las Vegas
The result of this design process is a piece of furniture that is as adaptable as the stores it lives in.
We were thrilled to see our Rolling Retail Pegboards go out into the world. Our first shipments landed at a boutique store in Whistler and the MGM in Las Vegas. Seeing the boards in such high-traffic, premium environments confirmed that we had met the brief. The units provided the clean, modern aesthetic these brands required while offering the mobility needed for dynamic retail floors.
